Liver Transplantation & HCC Outpatient Clinic

Liver Transplantation & HCC Outpatient Clinic

This clinic has been in service since 2012, providing specialized care to the most difficult liver patient groups, i.e., those with decompensated cirrhosis who are submitted to work up for transplantation, those who received a liver transplant, and those with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

It is the only specialized outpatient clinic in Greece except of the liver transplant centers in Thessaloniki & in Athens. We monitor such patients starting from month 1 post transplantation. We manage immunosuppressive drugs, monitor liver and renal function, and advise for the appropriate surveillance procedures. Thus, our patients – in most cases – do not have to travel again to the transplant center for follow-up.

Patients with HCC are another special group, with a continuous flow of data on diagnosis and treatment. We provide an integrated approach for both tumor management and cirrhosis. There is close collaboration with the Department of Radiology for percutaneous and transjugular biopsies, transarterial chemoembolization, microwave or radiofrequency ablation, with the Department of Surgery for tumor resection, with the Department of Oncology also providing access to a multidisciplinary team for systemic treatment, and lastly with the transplant centers for those who fulfill the criteria.
